“How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every society! How important it is to have intergenerational exchanges and dialogue, especially within the context of the family, where grandparents transmit the experience and wisdom of their live.”
Today, due to the breakdown of the family, single parenting, and the changing moral values in our predominantly secular society, grandparents as never before have the mission of passing on the faith to their families. It is a vocation, a calling, from which they can’t retire.
The importance of the role of grandparents as evangelizers was confirmed in 2002 when the Catholic Grandparent Association (CGA) was founded with the blessing of the Vatican. They remind us that it is the unique vocation as a grandparent to pass your Catholic faith down to your grandchildren safeguarding it for generations to come.
You are invited to take the CGA Grandparent’ pledge: “Dear God, I promise with the help of your grace, to do my best to fulfill my vocation to pass on my faith to the next generation.”
In the USA , Grandparents Day is celebrated after Labor Day and it falls on September 9th. Here in SMC parish we will start our Grandparents’ Club on Wed. September 12th at 7pm at Guardian Angels. The Club meets monthly on the 2nd Wednesday. Stop in at the parish office to pick up the book God’s Guide to Grandparenting. It will be used as a discussion guide.
Here is an opportunity for you to share your challenges and gain insights and tools on how to strengthen the faith of your children and grandchildren. Won’t you please answer the call?
