Choose the better part!

We all know the story of Martha and Mary…….Jesus and his disciples stopped at their home in Bethany. Jesus loved them and felt at home visiting with them. Martha welcomed them with open arms. She was like a ball of fire bustling about trying to prepare food and serve a wonderful meal to Jesus and his friends.
With so many tasks to be done, when she noticed that her sister Mary was still in the living room sitting at Jesus’ feet listening attentively, she lost it. So she complained to Jesus and told him to tell Mary to help her in the kitchen.
Jesus surprises her with a mild rebuke, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”
Martha must have been taken aback at this scolding about her busyness. She is wrong and her sister is right? Joanna Weaver, in her book “Having A Mary Spirit,” suggests He wasn’t condemning her efficiency and hard work. He wasn’t telling her she had to be just like Mary to please Him. Jesus simply didn’t want Martha so caught up in kitchen service for him that she missed out on the joy of listening to him and being with him.”
He loves Martha for her hospitality and service but it is not enough. His message to Martha is really a message to all of us. It is not as good as putting the Lord first in our hearts “front and center.” Martha was too busy with other things to listen to Jesus. Today many of us are Marthas.
The “better part” that Mary chose was the “one thing needed” in all our lives ..Him…..to stay in a loving close relationship with Him first and all will be well. No need to worry.
