Pentecost Sunday is a magnificent Holy Day and it marks the birthday of the Catholic Church. Christ ascended into heaven forty days after the resurrection but not before he gives the Church the most precious “Birthday” gift ……..the Holy Spirit.
He tells the apostles that he must ascend to the right hand of the Father taking his rightful place in order for the Holy Spirit to come and dwell in them. Remember how frightened the Apostles in the upper room were, believing that Christ had abandoned them. But he reassures them that God is with them.
In John 15, Jesus promises to send them the spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father and himself. This will enable them to testify to the world the “good news “of salvation that his resurrection brought.
When Jesus breathed on them in the upper room and said to them “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained,” that was the day the Church was born.
As we see in Acts, repentance for one’s sins is at the heart of the missionary work that built the Church in those early days. Guided by the Holy Spirit, the spirit of truth, the redemptive message of the cross converted thousands of unbelievers.
Today, the Holy Spirit continues to reveal the “fullness of truth” to over a billion Catholics worldwide. We are the only Church that is founded by Jesus Christ…... the spirit of truth. He continues to assure us just as he did the 12 apostles that not even the gates of hell will prevail against the spirit of truth.
Over 2,000 candles on the cake! WOW!
