Just A Reminder of What Spiritual Friendship Is

What exactly is spiritual friendship?  How is it different from regular friendships? Mary Poust in her book, Walking Together Discovering the Catholic Tradition of Spiritual Friendship, says “spiritual friends are two people bound together by a love of God.  They walk side by side with God always between them.”

Poust goes on to say that “spiritual friends magnify our virtuous qualities.”  More casual friends might bring out the worst in us like idle gossip and jealousy.  Spiritual friends bring out our best--inspiring us to live in humility, honesty and charity.  Spiritual friends inspire us to move beyond pettiness where our hearts and minds are focused on doing what is right.  They are reaching for life in heaven while accompanying one another as pilgrims following the Way here on earth.

When Jesus sent out his disciples to be witnesses to His teachings, he sent them out two by two.  He knew they would be able to strengthen and encourage each other in times of trial.  Just as He did during His public ministry, He continues to gather people that are friends of His to be friends of one another.

Fr. Gary Caster, Chaplain at Williams College, says “It is important to gather around us, people who have fallen in love with Christ”.  If you want to know Christ, follow Christ and grow in faith--challenge and enrich yourself with great spiritual friendships.  Father Caster asks “do you have any good spiritual friendships?

Here is some good news!  At our parish we have a Spiritual Friends Ministry that you can easily be a part of.  We have monthly meetings with lively discussion that help us to live a more Christ centered life.  Weekly articles do the same.  Plan to stay connected and join in.
