Most of us have a “to do” list or calendar on which we put the most important items we need to accomplish for the day from seeing the doctor to having dinner with friends. But don’t forget the most important appointment of all and keep it daily………an appointment with God.
In Matthew 6, Jesus calls all of his disciples to a daily prayer life. Why? Because prayer is essential to a strong relationship with him. We need to let go and pray in such a way that it leads us to do his will in our lives. When the apostles asked him “Lord how do we pray?” Jesus gave them and us the Our Father as the perfect way to pray.
Here are some practical ways to use the Our Father as a strong foundation of your prayer time, as suggested by Ralph Martin in his book Hungry for God.
- “Hallowed be thy name” – Give thanks and praise to God for the blessings in your life and for prayers answered.
- “Your will be done” – Read scripture and hear what he is saying to you. Meditate and journal on what speaks to your heart.
- “Give us this day our daily bread”– Pray for our needs and those of others. Ask God for his will in your life. Journal what you need to bring to him.
- “Forgive us our trespasses” – Tell him what’s on your mind including how you have erred and failed him. Ask for his mercy and grace to change. Do this regularly.
Prayer puts Jesus at the center of our daily life making it easier to follow him. Be sure to have a specific time and place to pray.
But most important keep that appointment with God!
