Spiritual Communion

Mar 25, 2020

Sunday after Sunday Catholics receive communion and really don’t think about the availability of that host that is placed in their mouths.  The Corona virus pandemic suddenly has made us look at what happens when the “bread of life” isn’t there to nourish us.  No mass!  No communion!  What do we do?

This Lent all Catholics have an opportunity to learn a powerful spiritual lesson.  Namely, that Jesus isn’t always limited to the sacraments is He?  He can come to us any way He wants to at any time, spiritually.  This challenges us to look deeply at our relationship with Him and how much we miss receiving Him.

When we can’t attend mass but have this deep longing and desire to receive Him we can still participate in it by offering a prayer of spiritual communion.  No doubt He is pleased as we ask Him to come into our hearts spiritually.

Mass is being said on EWTN three times a day so you can have “spiritual communion” daily.  St. Marianne Cope staff members are also offering daily prayer on our website.

Here is a spiritual communion prayer which you can say to accompany that deep hunger for the Lord at any time.

“My Jesus, I believe that you are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things,

and I desire to receive you into my soul.

Since I cannot, at this moment, receive you sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you.

Draw near to God and he will draw near to you………..James 4:8

Have a blessed Lent, Jeanne
