World Day of Grandparents And the Elderly

Feast Day of St. Anne and St. Joachim

Pope Francis has established World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly on the fourth Sunday in July.  This is to be closest to the Feast Day of St. Joachim and St. Anne, the parents of Mary, the Mother of Jesus.  Joachim and Anne remained childless for many years and prayed constantly for a child.  Later in life they received word from an Angel that Anne would conceive a child.  They were overjoyed when Mary was born and consecrated her to God.

In his message, Pope Francis summons all grandparents to recognize and be renewed in their sacred calling to be guardians of the connection between their family’s history and salvation history.  Most important is to pass on to the younger generation a clear awareness of their place in the bigger picture.  The Pope said that the vocation of grandparents is linked to their vocation as disciples.  Just like the Lord never goes into retirement, he stated, there is no retirement from the work of proclaiming the Gospel and handing down the faith to your grandchildren.

Fr. Landry says, “They are the ultimate ‘good cops’, leading by good example.”  The world is a better place because of how they live out their vocation.  So together with Pope Francis and the whole Church celebrate them, thank them, commit to spend time with them and pray for them.

Love and blessings………….Jeanne Leonardi
