Bible Study - The Gospel of Matthew

Join us for our study of the Gospel of Matthew beginning in January.

Matthew's Gospel makes many references to the Old Testament.  We will explore how the sacred author uses

  • Old Testament quotations and references to illustrate Jesus is the Messiah.
  • the aspects of the “Sermon on the Mount”, one of history’s most famous set of moral standards.
  • and we will discover how and why Christ's teachings so up ended the status quo of the religious leaders of the times that they ended up crucifying the Messiah our of fear of losing their power.

Our studies will be supplemented by references to Church documents, Early Church Fathers, Doctors of the Church and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. We will delve into these references and more to get a better understanding of God’s plan for our salvation.

We will meet via Zoom at 7 pm Wednesday evenings, Thursday at Noon. We will also meet Friday noon, in person, at Guardian Angels in room 5 beginning January 7/8/9, ending April 15/16/17 with breaks the week of Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. If you plan to attend, please contact Rick Halsted at rhalsted@frontiernet.net or leave word at the parish office, 334-3518 to receive Zoom information for the on-line sessions as well as weekly study materials. As the primary text, we will be using the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible booklet, “The Gospel of Matthew.” It is available through Ignatius.com and Amazon.com.
